AYR Spotlight: Ujjwal Gutta, Machine Learning Engineer

Employee Spotlight - Ujwa

Are You Ready to improve the future of work? Ujjwal is Ready! And that’s why he’s busy working on developing next-gen solutions to help enterprises just like yours prepare for the new era of work.

What attracted you to AYR, and what is your role?

The thing which attracted me most to AYR is the problem they’re solving in a very wide spectrum of domains. Building such an efficient platform that is highly scalable is a revolutionary aspect, especially when heavy computations are involved (GPUs).
I’m currently working as a Machine Learning Engineer at AYR. My job involves interacting with clients/customers on a regular basis, understanding their requirements, and developing and deploying solutions to their environment.

What was your previous experience before AYR?

I worked as a Data Engineer with Johnson & Johnson. In my university days, I did an Artificial Intelligence fellowship during which I worked as a consultant for an Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) company.

How would you describe the AYR company culture?

AYR, being a growth-stage startup, has a rapid-paced and agile work culture. We certainly fail fast and keep things moving with forward motion. The exciting part is getting to work on multiple projects at a time and just not being confined to a single task/project. I enjoy solving the most difficult challenges with proof of concepts that have us working right in front of customers and their teams.

Being a small team, you get face time with leadership on a regular basis. I believe this is essential for individual growth, and it encourages me to share feedback and allows us to make decisions fast.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

I wish more people could understand how essential it is to understand the business value of things before getting into the technical aspects. For me, working with customers regularly helps me to get a better sense of their business. This helps in building more efficient and tailored solutions to meet their requirements and build best-class capabilities to solve real-world challenges that the enterprise is facing.

How would you summarize what you do to an 8th grader?

My job as a Machine Learning engineer is to teach machines how to learn and perform a task. With AYR, the task extracting information from documents, emails, attachments, photos, and other content. This reduces any margin of error which is involved with humans being directly involved in tasks.

What inspires you about your everyday tasks?

Each day at AYR, I look forward to learning something new. I am extremely proud to be working on AI abilities and technology to solve business data challenges in days/weeks for use cases that the customer or other vendors have been trying to solve for months/years.

Do you have any hobbies or fun interests?

I enjoy playing racquetball on the weekends. I am a very huge scuba enthusiast trying to get certified as an Advanced Open Water Diver.

What’s your pet peeve?

When someone pretends to know what they’re talking about, but they actually don’t.

What skill do you think everyone should learn?

Developing healthy professional relationships and being socially active. You never know what you can learn from someone unless you take a chance and get to know them.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Time Travel. Go back in time and do some things differently … maybe. I mean, wouldn’t it be cool just to see!

Name any inspirational book/movie/music you have recently discovered.

I recently watched this very inspirational documentary about Michael Jordan called ‘Last Dance.’ It clearly shows that you can’t expect to be loved by everyone and how tough you have to be on yourselves in order to achieve greatness.
